Transparency Perception and its Influence to other Cues for 3-D Reconstruction

We can preattentively perceive transparency from a single image of a scene in which there exist transparent objects. Transparency is perceived in the very early stage of the human visual processing, and is a very important clue in recognition of circumstances, because it conveys front-and-back relations between objects. We propose the use of chromatic information for detecting transparency. First, by both experiments and theoretical calculations, we show that chromatic information is more effective for detecting transparency in an image than monochromatic information. Next, we present a method for detecting the transparency and identifying a transparent object by using R, G, and B chromatic information. Finally we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in scene recognition by an experiment with a real image.
